The Derby Family Arts Festival 2021 will bring a fantastic variety of creative events and activities to families in Derby this half-term. Events will cover film, art, music and theatre with many events being free.

The Festival is run as part of the Family Arts Campaign and is supported using public funding by the Arts Council England, with the aim to increase the range of arts events and activities available to all families and backgrounds.

Flutter and Fly

Sun 24 Oct

Derby Market Place, 11,30am and 3pm

Sinfonia Viva presents a magical musical adventure chock-full of spectacular story telling. Become immersed in this interactive story, as flitting birds, jet planes and a kite tied with string are all imaginatively portrayed in sing-along songs written by guitarist and composer Jack Ross and performed with Jack and members of the orchestra, alongside amazing projected illustrations by Eleanor Meredith. PLUS you’ll receive a free illustrated book of the story and music…so you can relive the adventure again and again. Booking essential £6 per person.


The Big Family Read

Derby Libraries’ Big Family Read takes place from Mon 4 Oct to Mon 29 Nov, supporting the development of children's reading and writing skills, contributing towards improving children’s literacy levels and promoting reading for pleasure. By taking one great book and encouraging hundreds of children and families across Derby to read, share and creatively engage with it, we aim to get families across the whole city reading and talking about books together.

Meet a Maker Trail

Museum of Making, during opening hours

This half term journey around the Museum of Making to discover some of the ingenious makers whose creations make up this fascinating collection.  Complete the challenges as you go to discover your inner maker.

Crafty Tuesday: Teddy Bear Scarves

Crafty Tuesdays is our crafty holiday session at Pickford’s House. This time prepare for cold winter days by using different techniques to create a cosy scarf for your teddy friends.

Art Hub: Dahomey Figures

Wednesday 27 October
Museum and Art Gallery, 10am-12pm 

At Art Hub we explore different creative techniques and processes – there is always something new to try in this artist-led session.  

This time we will be exploring the Museum’s collection of wonderful brass figures from Benin, Africa.  As part of Black History Month, we will be finding out more about the exquisite craftsmanship from this part of Africa and using them as inspiration to develop your drawing and sculpting techniques.

Suitable for children aged 7+ and their carers.

Wet Felting Workshop

Wednesday 27 October

Museum of Making

Explore how to turn soap, water and wool fibres into cloth! In this hands-on session you will learn the process of wet felt making to create pieces of cloth and felt balls. Taken through each step of the process you will learn how felt is formed and use this to develop your own design - thinking about colour pattern and texture.  This session is perfect for beginners. No prior experience needed.


Two workshop sessions are available:

10.15am-12.15pm or 1.30-3.30pm


Suitable for adults and children aged 7 and over.  All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Booking essential £15 per person. 10% discount for Members and Derby Museums Friends.



Pickford’s Plot: Nature Creative

Thursday 28 October

Pickford’s House, 10am-12pm

Join us for this nature-focused session in Pickford’s garden where you can unleash your creative side from observational drawing, poetry and creating art using natural elements. Immerse yourself in nature and see what happens!

Family Friday: Creepy Critters 

Friday 29 October

Museum and Art Gallery, 10-11.30am

In this session the whole family is welcome to play, make and have fun together.  Each one is focused on a theme to help you and your family explore your creative sides. Discover some of the creepy critters that live in the Nature Gallery and get into the Halloween spirit with a range of spooky crafts and stories.
