Emotionally Charged and Masterfully Performed: Jesus Christ Superstar shines at Buxton
Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s iconic rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar has taken Buxton Opera House by storm this week. Directed by Paul Kerryson, this bold, emotionally charged production blends the classic musical with a modern, gritty edge.
From the opening song, the energy inside the Opera House was electric, with the incredible house orchestra bringing Lloyd Webber’s music alive and delivering a searing rock score that had everyone’s toes tapping.
The cast, lead by returning lead Ross Clifton, gave an emotional and powerful portrayal of the extraordinary events leading up to Jesus’ death, as told through the eyes of Judas Iscariot. Clifton’s explosive vocal range expertly demonstrated the internal conflict of Judas and his opening performance of “Heaven on Their Minds” set the intense tone of the production. Jesus, played by Louis Moore, gave an outstanding performance with incredible vocals and his rendition of “Gethsemane” was particularly poignant and heart-wrenching.
Olivia Beall’s portrayal of Mary Magdalene offered a quiet, calming presence, her voice shining through “I Don’t Know How to Love Him.” The supporting cast were superb, a powerful ensemble who were able to effortlessly shift between roles and high-energy choreography. Their rendition of fan favourite ‘Superstar’ was flawless.
The production impressed with a minimalist set centred around a single platform and used clever lighting to reflect the tone of each scene. A balcony provided an effective backdrop throughout, sensitively used to depict the crucifixion which brought the show to a powerful close.
Buxton Opera House’s Jesus Christ Superstar is an enthralling, passionate production that is a must-see and runs until April 27th 2025.
